Ok first stuff first:

all the screenshots of the characters belong to their respective owners. =Shinerai*kilara=Dachindae=skysealer=Naphiro If you have any problems with me posting your characters as awesome examples I will remove it. the wolves at the bottom is free lineart by ~wolf-minori.

the websites mentioned in the tutorial are [link] [link]

Ok well I hope you guys enjoy this and that it's helpful to you in some way. Lately every time I'm working on something somebody posts something really similar....before me, so i kinda look like a loser when I post it afterward :noes: oh well that's life right? anyway another tutorial to look at would be [link] by =purplekecleon. So if you would please put a ^ in your comments if you read the whole tutorial, i'll also know if you read the comments ^_^.

That's interesting, I don't think this is very good color tutorial at all! ;) But of course you are welcome to translate it all the same.

I think it's great, because it's different from what other artists think of color theory :) I like your approach and the way you "serve" it :)

While I really admire this awesome tool, and I've faved it and added it to a quality-control group tutorials for use to help others better themselves and their project with colors...I have to add that at least half of the sheet is mostly based on personal interpretation or "mainstream" thoughts on color. =p
While I know this is a basic guide and suggestion for a lot of younger or less experienced artists, it just spurred me to mention some thoughts.

For someone like me, yellow doesn't promote happiness. It creates a very stressful feeling of anxiety and unhappiness. Purple, as noble as it is, can also represent deception or a toxic feeling, as can green. It can be as easily powerful like red. Pink CAN represent sexual drive, but I can't even picture it off the top of my head most the time as anything but "girly sweetness" or innocence. I tend to attribute red to sexuality, or even black.
In the end, color often has very little to do with a character, as many characters can break their mold and color-stereotype if they have a more detailed personality, or history. If they're more than just a random project, but a long-time hobby, or more...then color may mean very little.
Example in reality: African(brown) people aren't necessarily "slow moving". Just as Caucasian(white) people aren't all "pure" or "truthful".
With planned character development, white can just as easily be "evil", while black can be "good".

I didn't mean this as an argument, by the way. XD Just observation and input. :3 (I know this is also an old tutorial, so I apologize. lol)

You're right it is personal interpretation and mainstream, it was written with very little
knowledge about color theory for people with little to none. As far as color "meanings"
it was basic and referring generally to that one hue. Different versions of pink are going
to have a wide range of "meanings" which will differ upon each individual and their own
experiences.

I think color can have a lot to do with a character if one so chooses. However, I
think that if a character is described as girly and dons pink I find that incredibly boring
and shallow. It seems that most OC's that are made are to paint pretty patterns and
cool color combinations, and these consequently have little personality development.
I do think color is more meaning when it's part of shape, but no I don't think it's
necessary for characters at all. I think characters are definitely more interesting if they
break color stereotypes rather than follow them.

As an interesting side note with your example of Africans and Caucasians. One could
counter that many 'brown' people live in 3rd world countries and literally live off the
things of the earth, and are "slow-moving" in regards to technology, country development,
etc. And 'white' people aren't actually white are they? Peach, cream, tan, whatever it
could possibly be.

Thanks for the cool discussion, this was made long ago, the spelling and grammar is bad
and the tutorial as whole doesn't seem particularly useful. I think the only point I wanted
to get across at the time was for people to actually think about what they're doing rather
than just slapping every color that seems appealing to them on an animal that they like

;)

All excellent points! XD And I'm surprised you replied back with so much, so fast.
I apologize for sounding like a grump--I think I was feeling terribly moody at that moment and didn't realize it. e_o lol

And now I'm suddenly curious! Have you ever considered making an advanced version of something like this? Like natural colors to suit environments and such? We can never have too many of those. >3> ♥♥♥

Well my species design guide hints at that, but no I probably won't do something
like that anytime soon. I am currently working on a guide for digitally painting
feathers and wings but there's not too many resources and so it's all personal
experimentation. Which of course is taking a very long time.

Great tutorial!! :D
Though I must admit that I prefer to 'go with the flow'; Instead of planning out colour schemes I find it easier to set a base colour and then let my eyes decide which colourse fits best :P

Great work. This is really helpful to those of us who are always lost with what colour things should be.

I like how you've kept it simple and to the point, but at the same time managed to give a great deal of information. I have a feeling that those websites are going to come in handy in the future!

If only coloured pencils came with a 'Hue/Saturation' option... *sigh*

Purr....Thanks for the great help Eviri! I'm gonna use this soon, but I'm very irritated right now, my computer decided to be a butt and it restarted by itself, so three days of work.....gone! I should have probably saved sooner....I'm sad, so sad. But enough complaining.... I use this tomorrow!
